b1LANGUAGE:b3
SDDFR was written and compiled using GFA Basic by GFA

b1BACK GROUND:b3
As members of three local user groups, two in Detroit and one in
Windsor, we found that all of the Atari ST disk librarians used
Super Directory from Michtron to catalog the club disks. Two out
of the three were talking about having a stand alone program that
would let them give the members a copy of the Super Directory data
file so they could view the contents of the library at any time to
see what disks are available for purchase.
One of the clubs wanted to be able to create an ASCII file out of
the Super Directory data file that could in turn be imported into
a word processor or desk top publishing program for printing.

b1SOLUTION:b3
SDDFR_12.PRG -- (Version 1.12) -- April 18, 1988
With SDDFR this is possible. The program will let the user view
the contents of a Super Directory data file on the screen, dump it
to a printer or create an ASCII text file, and it's fast.
b1OPERATION:b3
To run the SDDFR program double-click on the filename SDDFR_12.PRG
the title screen will then appear with credits and version number.
To exit the title screen hit any key or click the mouse.
Once past the title screen, you will be asked to enter the current
date if the system date is not already set. All outputs from this
program are dated in order to keep track of current listings.
At this point a fileselect box will appear asking you to select
the Super Directory data file that you wish to work with. The
working data file can be pulled from any drive and from within any
folder on that drive. The default drive will be the one the that
the program was boot from and the default path will be \*.SD.
Once a filename is selected, an alert box will appear asking you
to chose an output device. You will be able to pick from Screen,
Printer or Disk.
b1SCREEN OUTPUT:b3
If screen output is selected a title line at the top of the screen
will display the name of the data file you are viewing and the
date. The display will be two columns across, twenty filenames
per column with descriptions. You can abort the display at the end
of any screen by pressing the Esc key.
b1PRINTER OUTPUT:b3
If printer output is selected the program will first look to see
if the printer is on-line. It will then print a title line on the
top of the first page that will include the name of the data file
you are working with and the date. The printed page will contain
two columns with a unlimited number of filenames per column. It
will also skip perforations with tractor feed paper. Displayed in
the center of the screen will be the name of the data file you are
printing and a filename counter. The last line printed will
contain the name of the data file and the number of filenames in
the listing. The printer output can be aborted at any time by
pressing the Esc key.
b1DISK OUTPUT:b3
With disk output you will create an ASCII file that can be
imported into any word processor or desk top publishing program.
The first line of the ASCII file, like the rest, will contain the
name of the data file and the current date. The screen will
SDDFR_12.DOC Version 1.12 4/18/88 Page 2
display the name of the data file you are converting to ASCII and
a filename counter. The ASCII output file is just like the
printer output in that the last line in the file will contain the
name of the data file and the number of filenames in it. This is
the only function that can not be aborted during operation, once
started you will have to wait until the ASCII file is created.
b1SPECIAL NOTES:b3
The ASCII file created with disk output will be about one third
the size of the original Super Directory data file. You will also
be able to double-click on the file from the desk top and show it
on the screen.
The printer output was created around the Panasonic 1092i in
Epson mode. With this in mind, the program should work fine with
most Epson compatible printers.
If speed is a factor in using the program, we suggest that you run
it from a ramdisk. Just copy the program with the data files you
will be working with over to a ramdisk (at least 360K). Working
from a ramdisk this program will create an ASCII file of 2006
filenames in seventy seconds.
At this time the disk output file will be written to the root
directory of the destination drive. Destination drives are A:,
B:, C:, D: and F: which will cover most applications.
If you are creating an ASCII text file and the same text file
exist on the destination drive the program will create a backup
by renaming the original file to .BAK and then writing the new
file.
b1UPDATES:b3
Registered users of SDDFR will receive program updates for $2.00
to cover shipping and handling. If an update becomes available
the user will be notified by us via U.S. Mail. Customized
versions are also available to registered users for a small fee.
b1BUGS:b3
The program has been beta tested by three user groups and has
performed without a hitch. If you locate a problem, please report
it to us at the address below with a note outlining the steps
needed to recreate it.
